The first name given to this plaza was Antigua Real Contaduría, it was chosen because the Royal Offices functioned there. The name was changed by the people to Plaza de la Aduana in the 1970s, since in the same building was organized the Customhouse Administration.
When the statue of the discoverer Christopher Columbus was unveiled on October 12th of 1894, the town hall named it Plaza de Colón, name that would change at the beginning of the XXth century by order of the city hall as a posthumous tribute to an illustrious son of Cartagena who was four times president of the Republic to Plaza de Rafael Núñez.
