History of Cartagena de Indias - The assault of Martín Cote

Colonial Period

The Assault of Cote

In 1559 the turn to attack the still unprotected Cartagena de Indias would be for the french Martin Cote.

Don Juan de Bustos Villegas, then governor, led a counter offense made of trenches and poisoned thorns where the enemy ships would disembark.

The Chief Maridalo from Isla de Carex (Tierrabomba) also participated in the defense with five hundred archer indians.

Nevertheless, the french were more than a thousand men, they penetrated the defenses and took the city leaving with a numerous booty.
