Calle de las Damas

Calle de las Damas - Cartagena de Indias

At the beginning of 1600 it was called Calle de Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles.

The leyend says that when the Governor Anastasio Zejudo Nuñez rendered information about the why the construction of the walls had cost a fortune to the then king of Spain Charles VI, the king tried to see through a spyglass the magnitude of such an expensive work. Since this was impossible he decided to disguise himself as a lady and travel all the way to Cartagena to take a closer look at the walls. He stayed in one of the houses of this street, obviously they came incognito and as no one could identify them, the neighbors imagined any theory that popped to their minds. At the end they could not establish the identities of the ladies who returned to Spain after a few days. Since then this is the name of the street, Calle de las Damas. (Ladies Street)
