When it was a plaza it was the most extense in the city. It was called Plaza del Matadero when the public slaughterhouse functioned in one of its ends. Later on when the slaughterhouse disappeared and the public market was built the name was changed for Plaza del Centenario.
In 1911 at the independence centennial it was re baptized as Plaza de la Independencia and then changed in 1916 to Plaza de los Mártires in honor of the nine heroes that were executed here 100 years before.
