It owes the name to the Church Santo Domingo, located on one of its corners.
It is said that when the church tower was almost finished the devil in person tried to make it collapse by jumping on to it, holding it and shaking it vigorously without being able to carry out its vile assignment. Though the tower was left a bit crooked, or so it is said.
Anyway, the frustrated Devil jumped into a nearby public well leaving the waters with a strong sulfur taste and the well was immediately closed.
